Regardless of whether you are feeling anxious, hesitant or confident, there is a looming uncertainty about what to anticipate in your child's upcoming speech therapist appointment. Rest assured, your little one is in good hands - and I'm not talking about my hands.

You have already accomplished the first step - and that is actively seeking professional help for a concern you would've had regarding your child's speech, language and/or communication. So what comes next?

The first impression is so important to build trust between your child and the speech therapist, and really set the foundation for ongoing success in therapy. Our role as a Speech Pathologist is to ensure that your little one is in a truely comfortable environment surrounded by interesting opportunities, whether it may be a miniature Gabby Doll House or a Hotwheels race track, or even quite simply: bubbles! The aim: play, play, play with toys of your child's interest, because that is exactly how we get them to communicate. Its our neat trick to really get a first hand look of what exactly brought your child to speech therapy, may it be a stutter, slurred speech, difficulty to understand when speaking or not speaking at all!

Parents, be sure to write down your concerns and every question you may want to ask your therapist. The first meeting with your speech therapist is the best opportunity to really hone in and understand all the 'Whats' and 'Whys' Like, Why is it so important to do a hearing test? What can we do to encourage my child's speech at home? What goals can we work on to achieve the outcome we need? The Allied Health Clinic prides itself on encompassing Family Centred practices, and thus, our Speech Pathologist will work very closely with you, your child and your child's educators to ensure your little one's goals are consistently targeted and an outcome is well-achieved.

Well Done Parents. You are the first step to your child's success.
